Our Ballad 2: The Young Korean Singers Who Touched My Heart

1. A Korean Music Show That Is More Than a Singing Competition

Have you ever listened to a song and suddenly felt tears coming to your eyes?

That is exactly how I felt while watching Our Ballad 2 (우리들의 발라드 2), a Korean music competition broadcast on SBS.

At first, I expected another singing contest where talented people compete to become the winner. But as I watched the performances, I realized that this show was about something much deeper.

The contestants were not simply singing famous songs. They were sharing their dreams, personal struggles, family relationships, and hopes for the future through music.

What made the show particularly special was the young age of many contestants. The average age was just 17.9 years.

Some were still teenagers attending school, yet their voices carried emotions that even experienced adults could relate to.

As a viewer, I found myself thinking that music has no age limit. A young person can sometimes express feelings that adults struggle to put into words.

2. Park Ye-seung – A 15-Year-Old Girl Who Received a Perfect Score

<PRIVATE_PERSON> One of the most unforgettable performances came from Park Ye-seung, a 15-year-old girl who moved from Daegu to Seoul to pursue her dream of becoming a singer.

Living away from home at such a young age is not easy. She had been living independently in Seoul for approximately six months when she appeared on the program.

For her audition, she chose "I Will Shout Myself" (나를 외치다), originally sung by Korean rock singer Maya.

The song carries a powerful message about finding courage and moving forward on your own path.

Park Ye-seung explained that the song gave her the strength to keep pursuing her dream. She also wanted to repay her parents for believing in her decision to move to Seoul.

When she began singing, the atmosphere in the studio changed immediately.

Her powerful voice, impressive high notes, and emotional delivery surprised everyone. The judges and audience members stood up to applaud her.

One of the judges, pianist and producer Jung Jae-hyung, admitted that the performance moved him deeply. He was especially touched by the determination of such a young girl who had left her hometown to follow her musical dream.

Then came the result.

She received all 150 votes – a perfect score!

It was the first perfect score in the program.

Cha Tae-hyun later revealed that he had deliberately waited until the very last moment to press his voting button, hoping to become the final person to give her a vote.

For me, the most touching part was not the perfect score itself. It was the courage of a 15-year-old who was willing to take responsibility for her own dream.

3. Park Jin-seo – A 13-Year-Old Girl and Her Mother's Unconditional Support

Another unforgettable contestant was Park Jin-seo, the youngest participant in the competition at just 13 years old.

She came from Dangjin, a city in South Korea, and traveled with her mother by bus for music lessons.

Their journey reportedly took around five hours for a round trip, and they made this journey regularly.

Imagine spending so much time traveling every week simply to help your child follow a dream.

Her mother’s dedication was touching, but Park Jin-seo's gratitude toward her mother made the story even more emotional.

She chose "Good Bye Sadness, Hello Happiness", originally performed by Korean singer Yoon Mi-rae.

Her deep, mature voice was surprising for someone so young. From the very first notes, the audience reacted enthusiastically.

The emotional message of the song, combined with her personal story, brought tears to some of the judges.

Park Kyung-rim was visibly moved, while Joo Woo-jae praised her as if a great R&B singer had appeared on stage.

The result was remarkable:

148 votes out of 150, placing her second overall in the first round.

Watching her performance made me think about the countless parents who quietly sacrifice their time and energy to support their children's dreams.

Sometimes, the most beautiful love story is not a romantic one. It is the story of a parent and a child walking toward a shared dream.

4. Kim Su-a – When Music Becomes a Best Friend

Perhaps the most emotionally powerful story was that of Kim Su-a, a 19-year-old contestant who had been pursuing her dream while living in a youth shelter.

Because of difficult family circumstances, she had been living apart from her father.

During her first-round performance, she selected "Over the Rainbow", originally performed by the Korean band Jaurim.

When asked what she had been thinking about while singing, she mentioned memories of the past, the clouds in the sky, and friends at the youth shelter.

Her answer revealed how deeply connected music was to her everyday life.

Before singing, she appeared shy and nervous. But as soon as the music started, her entire presence changed.

Cha Tae-hyun commented that music seemed to have become her best friend.

Jung Jae-hyung praised her courage in sharing a difficult personal story through music. Actress Moon Geun-young said that she wanted to ask Kim Su-a how her day had been and listen to her story.

That comment was especially touching because it showed that sometimes people do not need advice or criticism. They simply need someone willing to listen.

In the second round, Kim Su-a returned with "Love Is" (사랑이란) by Yoon Sang.

Her performance once again moved the judges to tears. BIBI described the emotional impact of the performance in an especially powerful way, saying it felt as though the song had reached directly into her heart.

Kim Su-a explained that she had been thinking about people in the world who might still be living through difficult experiences like the ones she had faced.

She received 86 votes and defeated her opponent, Danish contestant Yoo Hye-ri, to advance to the next round.

I found her story particularly meaningful.

Music cannot solve every problem in life, but it can help people feel less alone. For Kim Su-a, singing seemed to be a way of expressing feelings that ordinary conversation could not fully communicate.

5. Lim Bada and Heo Chae-min – A Close Battle Between Two Talented Singers

The second-round one-on-one battles also brought exciting musical moments.

One of the most anticipated matchups was between Lim Bada and Heo Chae-min.

Lim Bada chose Lee Moon-sae's classic ballad "Forever with You" (그대와 영원히).

His clear and gentle voice gave the familiar song a fresh feeling. The judges praised his unique vocal color and emotional interpretation.

His opponent, 15-year-old Heo Chae-min, chose Lee So-ra's "I'm Happy" (난 행복해).

Despite her young age, she delivered the song with impressive emotional depth.

Both performances were excellent, but the competition was intense.

Lim Bada received 80 votes and advanced to the next round.

This battle reminded me that singing is not only about hitting the right notes. Two people can perform the same style of music and create completely different emotional experiences.

6. Why Is Our Ballad 2 So Popular?

There are several reasons why this program has attracted so much attention in South Korea.

First, it brings different generations together.

Many of the songs are classic Korean ballads that older generations grew up listening to. Younger contestants introduce these songs to a new audience with their own interpretations.

Second, the contestants have genuine personal stories.

Park Ye-seung's determination, Park Jin-seo's relationship with her mother, and Kim Su-a's experience of finding comfort in music make the performances more meaningful.

Third, the judges respond emotionally rather than focusing only on technical ability.

The panel includes well-known Korean entertainers and musicians such as Jung Jae-hyung, Cha Tae-hyun, Moon Geun-young, Roy Kim, Jung Seung-hwan, Joo Woo-jae, and Park Kyung-rim.

Their reactions help viewers understand the emotional meaning behind each performance.

Finally, the show reminds us of the power of classic ballads.

A good song does not become meaningless just because it is old. When a new generation sings it with sincerity, the song can feel completely new again.

7. What Is a Korean Ballad?

For international viewers who are unfamiliar with Korean music, a ballad is generally a song that focuses on melody, emotion, and storytelling.

Korean ballads often explore themes such as:

  • First love and heartbreak

  • Family and friendship

  • Memories and nostalgia

  • Loneliness and hope

  • Personal dreams and difficult life experiences

Unlike some music genres that emphasize rhythm and dancing, traditional Korean ballads often allow the singer's voice and emotional interpretation to take center stage.

This is why a quiet performance with a piano accompaniment can sometimes be more powerful than a spectacular stage production.

Our Ballad 2 is a wonderful introduction to this part of Korean music culture.

8. My Personal Impression – The Real Winner Is the Courage to Dream

After watching these performances, I realized that the most important part of the show is not necessarily who wins.

Park Ye-seung showed us that age should not limit ambition.

Park Jin-seo reminded us of the love and sacrifices that parents make for their children.

Kim Su-a demonstrated that music can become a source of comfort when life is difficult.

Their stories made me think about my own dreams and the people who supported me along the way.

As adults, we sometimes become so focused on work, money, and daily responsibilities that we forget how important it is to have a dream.

Watching these young singers reminded me that it is never too early or too late to begin again.

I also appreciated how the program allowed contestants to express themselves through songs that had been loved by previous generations.

It was as if the past and the present were meeting on one stage.

9. Where Can International Viewers Watch It?

Our Ballad 2 is an SBS television program in South Korea.

International viewers can look for official performance clips and program updates through SBS's official website and YouTube channels.

Searching for the Korean title "우리들의 발라드2" will also help you find the original performances.

If you enjoy Korean ballads, I recommend starting with these performances:

  • Park Ye-seung – Maya's "I Will Shout Myself"

  • Park Jin-seo – Yoon Mi-rae's "Good Bye Sadness, Hello Happiness"

  • Kim Su-a – Jaurim's "Over the Rainbow"

  • Kim Su-a – Yoon Sang's "Love Is"

  • Lim Bada – Lee Moon-sae's "Forever with You"

The original Korean recordings are worth listening to as well. Comparing them with the contestants' versions is a great way to discover how different generations interpret music.

10. Final Thoughts – Some Songs Stay in Our Hearts Forever

There are many television competitions in the world, but only a few make us stop and think about our own lives.

Our Ballad 2 is one of those programs for me.

The young contestants are not simply trying to become famous singers. They are sharing their experiences, expressing their emotions, and showing the courage to stand in front of an audience.

Some have supportive families. Others have faced difficult circumstances. Yet they all share one thing: a sincere desire to sing.

I was especially moved by the idea that a song can become a friend, a message to a parent, or a declaration of hope for the future.

Perhaps that is the real beauty of music.

A great song does not ask how old you are, where you come from, or what you have been through. It simply reaches your heart.

I hope these young Korean singers continue to grow, find their own musical identities, and share their voices with the world.

And I hope international viewers will discover the beauty of Korean ballads through their performances.

What song has ever touched your heart so deeply that you could never forget it?
